What to Expect When Your Pet is in Our Care
🩺Surgery & Dental Procedures:
At The Vets, we understand that having your pet undergo a surgical or dental procedure can be a stressful experience. Whether it’s a routine desexing or a complex dental treatment, our goal is to keep you informed and reassured every step of the way. Here’s how we care for your pet – and what you can expect from us.
Before the Procedure: Preparation & Peace of Mind
To ensure your pet is ready for their procedure, we’ll provide clear instructions at the time of booking. Typically, this includes:
- Fasting: No food after 8pm the night before surgery (water is okay unless otherwise instructed)
- Admission time: You’ll be given a specific time to bring your pet in, usually between 8:00–8:30am
- Pre-surgical health check: Your pet will receive a full examination by one of our vets on the morning of their procedure
- Optional blood testing: Recommended for older pets or those with known health concerns, to check organ function before anaesthesia
🛌 While They’re With Us: Safe, Gentle, Professional Care
We treat every patient as if they were our own. During surgery or dental care, your pet will be:
- Monitored constantly by our experienced team using advanced equipment (heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, etc.)
- Given pain relief and fluids as appropriate for their age, procedure, and condition
- Kept warm and comfortable in our recovery area, with soft bedding and calm surroundings
- Attended to closely while waking up from anaesthesia – no patient is ever left alone during recovery
If your pet is undergoing a dental procedure, we’ll perform a full examination under anaesthetic. If we find any unexpected dental disease requiring tooth extractions, we’ll call you before proceeding.
📞 Communication is Key: We’ll Keep You Updated
You’ll hear from us:
- If we need to discuss additional findings or treatment
- When your pet is in recovery and doing well
- When it’s time to pick them up
We welcome calls during the day if you’d like a progress update – just give us a ring.
💰 Understanding Costs
We know cost matters. That’s why we:
- Provide detailed estimates before the day of the procedure
- Explain what’s included and what could lead to extra costs (e.g., tooth extractions, pathology)
- Offer payment plan options to help with budgeting, if needed
🏡 Going Home: Caring for Your Pet After Surgery or Dental
You’ll receive clear written and verbal discharge instructions at pick-up, covering:
- Medication use and pain relief
- Food and water instructions
- Rest and activity restrictions
- Signs to watch for and when to call us
- When to return for a recheck or suture removal
We’ll also let you know when to call if you have any questions once you’re home – we’re here for you and your pet, even after they leave our clinic.
🐾 Your Pet’s Comfort Matters to Us
From admission to discharge, our team prioritises your pet’s physical and emotional wellbeing. We:
- Use gentle handling techniques and fear-free strategies where possible
- Allow time for calm settling in and recovery
