Environment & Sustainability

At The Vets Sale, caring for animals is only part of the story. We believe that looking after pets and wildlife goes hand in hand with looking after the planet they call home.

That’s why we’ve made a strong commitment to becoming a truly green veterinary clinic.

Environment & Sustainability

Our Green Clinic Initiatives

  • 100% Gas-Free – Our clinic is completely gas-free and runs on solar power, supported by a Tesla Powerwall battery.
  • Maximising Renewable Energy – We aim to be self-powered through most of the year. Outside of winter, our goal is 100% self-sufficiency, but seasonal sunlight changes mean we currently import some power from the grid β€” last month this was 36%, and in the previous month, during peak winter demand, it was 50%. Even so, our annual energy use is predominantly renewable.
  • Eco-Friendly Transport – We use an electric car for house calls, reducing emissions even when we’re on the road.
  • Waste Reduction – We minimise medical, office, and general waste wherever possible and recycle where we can.
  • Sustainable Purchasing – We choose suppliers and products that share our commitment to the environment.

Solar panels & electric vehicles are part of our commitment to the environment and sustainability.Β

Why This Matters

As a Veterinary Clinic Supporting Wildlife Care, we see firsthand how environmental changes affect animals. Issues like nutrient runoff, pollution, and climate change impact our local wildlife, pets, and the health of our beautiful Gippsland Lakes.

We also see firsthand the challenges facing wildlife in our region β€” from pollution and climate change to the loss of their natural habitats. Increasingly, native animals are being displaced or injured as their homes are destroyed or fragmented by land clearing, development, and environmental degradation.

Algae blooms, for example, have been increasing in many waterways due to nutrient runoff from land use and poor water management. These blooms can harm aquatic life, birds, and even pets. By running our clinic sustainably and raising awareness, we’re doing our bit to help protect these precious ecosystems.

What You Can Do

Small changes in daily life can make a big difference:

  • Pick up pet waste so nutrients don’t wash into drains and waterways.
  • Use low-phosphorus fertilisers and avoid applying them before rain.
  • Dispose of unused medications safely β€” bring them back to us for proper disposal.
  • Support local clean-up days and environmental programs.
